HWN #014: 4 Dead Simple Strategies to Have the Energy of a 20 Year Old (even when you're much older)
Sep 16, 2023
I don’t always like to admit it, but I am getting a little older.
41 years old to be exact.
I was a little stubborn about some things.
It took me a few years to come to terms with the fact that I don’t recover from workouts as well as I once did.
It took me a few years to come to the terms with the fact that my body doesn’t respond to the same exercises that it once did.
The most eye opening?
It took me a few years to come to terms with the fact that I don’t have the same energy levels that I once had.
Once I came to terms with the fact that my energy levels aren’t what they once we’re, I made a few changes.
Stop using age as a reason and excuse for not having great energy levels. With a few simple lifestyle modifications you will have the energy levels of a 20 year old.
So today, I am sharing with you 5 simple actions you can take to improve your energy levels as you age.
Let’s jump in.
4 Dead Simple Strategies to Have the Energy of a 20 Year Old
- Drink more water
- Exercise consistently
- Get 8-10k steps a day
- Get 7+ hours of sleep a night
1) Drink More Water
Many people don’t realize how being slightly dehydrated can affect our bodies.
Even slight dehydration can make you feel grumpy, be in a bad mood, and give you an overall sluggish feeling.
By simply drinking enough water throughout the day you will see a dramatic increase in energy and feeling of happiness as the water stimulates the flow of hormones that release the ever so popular endorphins.
I recommend at least 1/2 your bodyweight in ounces of water per day. (A 200lb person should drink at least 100 ounces of water)
2) Exercise Consistently
Though it may seem counterproductive, exercising on a consistent basis is going to actually give you more energy to tackle your day and your life.
We know that strength training is going to improve your overall health, building you a stronger and more resilient body while cardiovascular work is going to improve heart health which will improve your endurance, both of which giving you more energy, strength, and endurance each day.
Consistent exercise will also help you sleep better. Better sleep will lead to a more energized you the next day.
3) Get 8-10k Steps a Day
By simply getting 8-10k steps each day (ideally outside) you will boost your energy levels and improve your mood. Research has actually shown that walking on a regular basis will increase energy levels and decrease fatigue in people of all ages.
Plus, research has also shown that 6k steps or more per day also have positive impacts on longevity. A nice added benefit.
4) Get 7+ Hours of Sleep a Night
This is without a doubt the most obvious on the list.
Getting more sleep, getting better quality sleep, improves all aspects of your life.
Every. Single. One.
6 hours is the minimum. 7-8 hours a night would be ideal.
In Summary
A lot of things are going to change as we age.
Some things we have control over, some things we don’t.
We can control our energy levels by making minor modifications to our day to day life. Drinking more water, getting consistent exercise, moving enough (and doing so outside), and getting enough sleep will all help immensely in improving your energy levels.
In health,
Craig
