HWN #022: 6 Ways to Add Variety to Workout Routines to Prevent Boredom
Jan 20, 2024Adding variety to your workout routines is a great way to prevent boredom and keep your fitness journey interesting.
It's also a great way to make progress by always challenging your body in a lot of different ways, keeping it adapting to the stimulus you place on it.
Varity doesn't need to be complicated. Little changes go a long way in preventing boredom and keeping the body progressing.
So today, I am sharing with you 6 ways to add variety to your workout routine to prevent boredom and continue to make progress.
Let's jump in!
6 Ways to Add Variety to Workout Routines to Prevent Boredom
- Switch up your cardio
- Explore different exercises
- Experiment with different formats
- Incorporate outdoor activities
- Set specific challenges
- Modify intensity and reps
1. Switch Up Your Cardio
Are you apt to do the same cardio each time you go to the gym?
Try different forms of cardio exercises such as running, cycling, swimming, jump rope, dancing, or hiking.
Are you apt to always to lower intensity cardio?
Interval training can also add excitement to your routine. Alternate between high-intensity and low-intensity intervals.
2. Explore Different Strength Training Exercises
Change your strength training routine by incorporating different exercises that target the same muscle groups.
For example, if you usually do bench presses with dumbbells, try using a barbell or a smith machine to change things up.
No matter what you are currently doing, make sure you are including compound exercises that work multiple muscle groups simultaneously, like squats, deadlifts, or presses.
3. Experiment with Workout Formats
Mix up the format of your workouts.
For instance, try circuit training, high-intensity interval training (HIIT), every minute on the minute, or even something else.
Doing so will challenge you both from a strength and a cardiovascular standpoint that you are not use to.
4. Incorporate Outdoor Activities
Take advantage of outdoor activities like hiking, cycling, or playing sports. Outdoor workouts provide a change of scenery and fresh air and is something you can do with your children and/or dog.
5. Set Specific Challenges
Challenge yourself with specific fitness goals, such as running a certain distance, increasing your strength, or improving flexibility.
Compete with friends or join online fitness challenges to add a competitive and motivational element to your workouts.
Nothing pushes or motivates you more than being part of some type of challenge.
6. Modify Intensity and Reps
Periodically adjust the intensity of your workouts.
This could mean increasing weights, adjusting the number of reps, or changing the tempo of your exercises.
Experiment with different training styles, such as strength-focused, hypertrophy-focused, or endurance-focused workouts.
I generally recommend changing things up every 3-5 weeks to keep things fun and progressing.
In Summary
Remember, the key is to keep things enjoyable and challenging.
By regularly introducing new elements into your workouts, you can maintain motivation and prevent boredom while also making incredible results.
In health,
Craig
